Eileen O'Shea

Eileen O’Shea was an Irish immigrant from County Cork who lived in Boston with her husband, Patrick O’Shea. The couple immigrated in 1968 and raised their children in the Boston area. Eileen later became a close family friend of Siobhan Hargreaves and Alastair Graham Hargreaves.

Background and Immigration

Eileen was born in County Cork around 1941. She and Patrick immigrated to Boston in 1968 and established their family there.

Marriage and Family

Eileen was thirteen years younger than Patrick. They met around 1957, when she was sixteen and he was twenty-nine, but did not begin a romantic relationship until she was nineteen. They began dating around 1960, later married, and raised children in Boston.

Their children included twins Liam and Lilian, known as Lily. Liam died in a car accident at age twenty-one. Lily survived her twin and remained part of her parents’ life.

Nursing Career

Eileen worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital for most of her career. Her clinical experience remained part of how she cared for family and friends after retirement; with Alastair’s permission, she assessed his nearly subluxed shoulder after a fall during the Hargreaves family’s first period in Boston.

Friendship with the Hargreaves Family

Eileen and Patrick met Alastair and Siobhan during a transatlantic flight to Boston in late 2006. The O’Sheas already lived in Boston and were returning from a visit with relatives in England, while Alastair and Siobhan were relocating to the Boston area. The O’Sheas drove the younger couple from the airport and invited them to spend their first night in the United States at the O’Shea home. The friendship continued after the flight.

February 2011 Hospitalization

During Alastair’s February 2011 hospitalization, Eileen brought food, checked in regularly, and offered to drive Siobhan home so she could rest. Lily cared for Charlotte Hargreaves and Catherine Hargreaves while Siobhan remained at the hospital.
